A build (BLD-1001, BLD-1002 ...) is the order to make N units of a product from its bill of materials at one location. You find them under Build in the Stockroom menu, on the Builds view - a queue of open builds with Completed of quantity, a Components readiness badge, status, due date and the workflow columns. Tabs split Open, Done and All; filters, a column picker and Export CSV are on the list.
Create a build
New build: pick the recipe (each one shows Can build N), a Quantity to build, the Location the components come from and, if the finished units land somewhere else, Output goes to. Add a Due date, a note, a priority or an assignee if you use them. The build snapshots the recipe - editing the bill of materials later never changes an open build. While a build is a draft you can still change its quantity, location and component lines.
Builds can also be raised for you - from the Restock page, a product or variant page, a Shopify order, or the out-of-stock rule. See Restock by building.
The components table
Every line shows the quantity per unit, Required for the whole build, Consumed so far, Here (available at the build's location right now), Short (what is missing for what is still to make) and Incoming with the purchase orders bringing it. The header says Can build N now. When something is short, Order shortfall drafts one purchase order per supplier for exactly the missing quantities - you review them before anything is ordered.
Record what you make
Record build asks how many units you made and prefills each component's consumption from the recipe - edit a line if you used more or less. Each record is a build record in the Runs table, and you can record as many as you like against one build (partial completion). Stockroom then moves stock in Shopify in one step: the finished product goes up at its location, and the components go down by what was consumed - unless you issued them first (see Issue components and work in progress). Shopify's inventory history shows the build number as the reason.
Scrapped units and yield. If some units failed and were thrown away, enter them in Scrapped next to Quantity built (a Scrap note appears for the reason). Scrapped units use components like the good ones - the consumption lines prefill for everything produced - but they never enter finished goods, and their share of the components and charges shows as a Scrap line in the Cost card rather than raising the cost of the good units. The build shows its yield (good units over everything produced) under the progress line, each record shows "1 scrapped" with its note, and the Builds export and the build reports carry Scrapped and Yield %. A record with 0 built and some scrapped is fine - the build stays In progress. If you would rather the good units absorb the waste, record fewer units with the real consumption, as before. Reworked units need nothing special: record them as a new build record with the component lines set to 0.
Reaching the planned quantity marks the build Built; making more than planned is allowed. Mark as built closes a build short at whatever was made.
Cost
The Cost card shows the estimated assembled cost before the first record (current component costs plus a share of charges) and the real build cost and Assembled cost per unit after. Build charges - Labor, Overhead, or your own label - are money you add to the build; they spread over the planned quantity and can be edited while the build is open. Tick Update product cost on a record to write the new on-hand-weighted average cost to the product in Shopify - it previews the number and is never automatic.
Status, undo and reopen
Mark blocked / Unblock - pauses a build without losing anything.
Undo on a build record reverses it completely - components back, finished units off, costs withdrawn - and the record stays in the list marked Undone.
Cancel build is only for a build where nothing has been recorded; Reopen brings a built or cancelled build back.
Unbuild - the same document the other way: create it with Unbuild ticked to take finished units apart and put the components back (a case into singles, a kit into its parts). Record unbuild lets you edit what came back if something broke.
Print and export
Print build sheet is the work order for the bench - the pick list with checkboxes, still needed / here / short, the runs so far and a sign-off line; Download PDF saves it; Export components (CSV) exports the lines. Activity at the bottom of the page lists everything that happened to the build and who did it.
Good to know
Open builds do not reserve stock in Shopify. The readiness badge is Stockroom's own math - and open builds claim stock from each other in creation order, so the second build on the same parts reads honestly.
A decimal recipe pushes whole numbers to Shopify, rounded across records so nothing drifts - one record of a tiny component can show 0 and catch up on the next.
Builds show up in the product's stock history and in the COGS and movement reports; the Builds report covers a period (see Build reports).
