Custom label sizes: add your own roll

Stockroom's 14 preset sizes cover most rolls and sheets. When yours is not one of them, add it under Settings > Labels. And for any size, preset or your own, the layout editor sets where each field sits and how large it prints.

Using a roll that is not one of the 14 presets? Measure a single label and add it: Settings > Labels > Your label sizes, then enter the Width and Height, choose whether you measured in Inches or Millimetres, and press Add size. The pencil beside a saved size opens the same form to rename it or adjust its gaps; the width, height and column count define the stock, so to change those, add a new size.

Measure the label itself, not the backing paper. On a roll with two or more labels across, Width is one label, not the roll - measure a single sticker and set Columns to how many sit side by side. If your roll carries labels side by side, the gaps around them are entered separately - see below. A 1 x 0.5 in roll and a 30 x 20 mm roll are both fine - Stockroom converts millimetres for you and shows both on the list afterwards.

Give it a Name if you like. "Shelf edge" or "Jewellery tags" is easier to pick out of a list than a measurement, and the name shows in every print dialog in place of the size. It is optional, and you can change it later - press Rename this size beside the size in the list (it is called Edit this size on a roll with more than one column).

If your roll carries labels side by side, set Columns to how many print in one pass across the roll. Most printers use 1. Get this wrong and a two-across roll prints down one side only, leaving the other column blank.

The two gap boxes are for the blank stock your roll leaves, and stay greyed out until Columns is more than 1. Gap between columns is the strip between one label and the next across the roll, and Gap before the first column is the strip along the left edge, before the first label. Both are in the unit you chose above, and both start at 0 - leave them there if your labels sit edge to edge.

These two are what line the printing up with the die. Take a 96 mm roll carrying two 45 mm labels, with 2 mm of backing at the left edge and 3 mm between the two: leave the gaps at 0 and every label prints a few millimetres to the left of where it belongs, so the right-hand column loses its first letter off the edge. Enter 3 and 2 and everything lands where it should. Measure with the roll in front of you - the numbers are usually on the box the stock came in. To change them later, press Edit this size beside the roll in the list, where the two gaps have their own Inches / Millimetres box.

The size then appears in every Print labels dialog alongside the presets, and behaves exactly like one: it remembers its own field checkboxes, warns you if a barcode is too long to scan at that size, and has its own layout you can edit (see Change what prints on a label and where). Stockroom works out the type sizes and barcode size from the measurements, and fits what it can - so how much goes on a label follows its height. Under about 0.65 in tall there is only room for the price, the barcode and its digits; taller stock adds the product name, then the variant, then the SKU and cost line.

Sizes can be between 0.5 and 4 inches wide and 0.375 and 4 inches tall, and you can keep up to 12 of them. Removing one from the list does not lose its layout - add the same measurements again and your layout comes back.
